Quchan; Reza Babernejad, Member of a Justice-Seeking Family of the Jina Revolutionary Movement, Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison

Reza Babernejad, a Kurdish citizen from Quchan and the brother of Mehdi Babarnejad, one of the victims of the Jina Revolutionary Movement, has been sentenced by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to a total of six years in prison.

According to Kolbarnews, Reza Babernejad, a Kurdish citizen from Quchan and a member of a justice-seeking family, was recently sentenced by Branch 101 of the Criminal Court of the county, presided over by Judge Pour-Aria.
He received five years of imprisonment on charges of “membership in groups opposed to the state” and one additional year on charges of “propaganda against the state.”

According to the provisions of the verdict and pursuant to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, only the most severe sentence, namely five years of imprisonment, is enforceable. The court also ruled that four years and six months of the sentence would be suspended for a specified period.

Reza Babernejad had previously been arrested for the second time by security institutions on June 6, 2024, and transferred to Quchan Prison. Several weeks earlier, he had also been detained by the IRGC Intelligence Organization for publishing content on social media coinciding with the death of Ebrahim Raisi and was released after 13 days upon posting bail.
However, only five days after his release, he was arrested again and was ultimately released from prison on bail on July 21, 2024, pending the completion of judicial proceedings.

This Kurdish citizen had also previously been arrested on August 11, 2023, by IRGC Intelligence forces in Quchan on the eve of the birthday anniversary of his deceased brother and has a prior history of judicial and security-related pressure.

Mehdi Babernejad, the 22-year-old brother of Reza Babernejad, lost his life on September 21, 2022, during the Jina Revolutionary Movement in the city of Quchan as a result of direct gunfire by government forces. His body was returned to the family only after three days of obstruction by security authorities and after the family had signed a written commitment. His burial ceremony in the village of Sharak was held under heavy security measures.
