Oshnavieh: Transfer of Kurdish Writer and Poet Omar Mohammadi to Prison to Serve Sentence

Omar Mohammadi, a Kurdish poet and writer from Oshnaviyeh, has been transferred to prison to serve a sentence of 5 years and 6 months in prison along with 4 years of suspended imprisonment, despite suffering from several chronic illnesses and being denied essential medical care and medication inside prison.

According to Kolbarnews, Omar Mohammadi, a 54-year-old author and poet from Oshnaviyeh, was arrested during the heightened security atmosphere that followed the Iran–Israel conflict.
He was later sentenced by the Oshnaviyeh Revolutionary Court to 5 years and 6 months of mandatory imprisonment and 4 years of suspended imprisonment, and began serving his sentence two months ago in Oshnaviyeh Prison.

Reports indicate that the charges against him are tied to his cultural and educational activities, including organizing Kurdish-language courses. His family and those close to him reject these accusations, describing the case as a politically motivated attempt to target a cultural activist.

Omar Mohammadi suffers from spinal disc disease, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney insufficiency, yet remains deprived of regular access to doctors, treatment, and necessary medication in prison. Despite requiring four daily doses of insulin, even this essential medical need is reportedly not being adequately met.

He was arrested on June 18, 2025, after security forces raided his home and transferred him to an Intelligence Ministry detention center. He spent months in legal limbo before being handed a heavy sentence that was issued and enforced without adherence to fair-trial standards.
