Mahabad; Arbitrary arrest of a law student by security forces

Amid the continued wave of arbitrary arrests of citizens across various cities in Kurdistan, a law student in Mahabad was arrested without a judicial warrant by security forces and transferred to an unknown location.

According to Kolbarnews, on Sunday, January 4, 2026, Iman Cheshteh, a law student and a citizen from Piranshahr, was arrested by security forces at the Darlak intersection in Mahabad and taken to an undisclosed location. According to the information received, the arrest was carried out without presenting a judicial warrant.

At the same time as Iman Cheshteh’s arrest, security agents raided his family home and, after searching the residence, confiscated several personal belongings, including his laptop, and took them away.

Iman Cheshteh is currently a law student in the city of Mahabad.

As of the time of writing this report, no information is available regarding the reasons for his arrest, his place of detention, or the charges brought against him.
