Sarvenaz Ahmadi, a child rights activist imprisoned in Evin Prison, has been on hunger strike for 18th day in protest against the denial of medical leave despite suffering from neurological and psychological issues.
According to Kolbarnews, Sarvenaz Ahmadi, who has been enduring severe mental and physical health problems, is protesting the refusal of her request for medical leave. She recently experienced another nervous breakdown and has been refusing both her regular medication and sedatives, leading to persistent headaches, insomnia, and muscle spasms. There is a concern that these conditions may trigger further nervous attacks.
Ahmadi had previously suffered a “panic attack” during a security raid on the women’s ward in Evin Prison and was hospitalized. Doctors had warned that her condition might be related to epilepsy and that she requires appropriate medical care outside of prison.
Since September 7, 2024, Sarvenaz has been on hunger strike in response to delays in receiving her medication and the rejection of her request for medical leave.
Sarvenaz Ahmadi was arrested on April 28, 2023, along with several labor and trade union activists at the home of Mohammad Habibi, a prominent teacher’s union activist, ahead of International Workers’ Day. She was sentenced by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to five years in prison for “assembly and collusion to act against national security” and an additional one year for “propaganda against the regime,” totaling six years. However, her sentence was reduced to three years and six months by the appeals court.
Ahmadi, who had also been arrested during the nationwide protests in 2022, was released on bail on December 7 of that year.
She holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Rehabilitation Sciences in Tehran and is known for her advocacy for children’s rights.
