Bojnord Prison; Continued Arbitrary Detention and 26-day Legal Limbo of wWestler Champion Mehdi Barzouei

Mehdi Barzouei, a Kurdish Kormanj citizen from Bojnord, a wrestler and national champion, remains in legal limbo after 26 days of detention and has been deprived of his most basic legal rights.

According to Kolbarnews, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, security forces raided Mehdi Barzouei’s home in Bojnord and arrested him without presenting a judicial warrant, transferring him to an undisclosed location. After undergoing a period of detention and interrogation, he was recently transferred to Bojnord Prison; however, his legal status remains unclear.

According to received information, throughout the 26 days of his arbitrary detention, Mehdi Barzouei has been completely denied access to a lawyer as well as visits with family members, and no official information has been provided regarding the charges against him.

The continuation of this situation has raised concerns about violations of civil rights and the detention conditions of this Kurdish athlete in Bojnord Prison.
