Due to unsafe work environments and poor conditions, nine workers were injured in a furnace fire at a steel melting plant in Zarand.
According to Kolbarnews, the incident occurred at the Zarand Iranian Steel Factory at 1:40 PM on November 8th. The accident was caused by an overflow of molten material from the melting furnace, resulting in superficial burns for nine workers aged between 22 and 40.
The head of Kerman’s pre-hospital emergency services reported that seven of the injured were taken to Hospitals in Zarand, and two were discharged shortly afterward. Five others chose to be sent to Shafa Educational Hospital in Kerman for additional assurance, where they were all treated and released. Seyed Mohammad Saberi stated that the burn severity for the transferred patients ranged from 2% to 5%. Zarand is located 75 kilometers north of the city of Kerman.
In 2023, a total of 2,115 workers (2,094 men and 21 women) lost their lives in workplace accidents—a 11.3% increase compared to the same period last year, when fatalities numbered 1,900.
Iran ranks 102nd globally in workplace safety—a very low position. It remains one of the most dangerous countries in terms of occupational safety, with numerous workers injured annually due to a lack of adequate workplace safety measures.
