The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Committee issued a statement expressing deep concern over the reaffirmation of the death sentence against Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist and women’s rights defender, calling it a clear violation of human rights.
According to the committee, the recent Supreme Court’s confirmation of the ruling without presenting any new evidence or addressing previous legal flaws is “alarming.” The committee has called for an immediate halt to all executions in Iran and urged the suspension of the death penalty, warning that carrying out such a sentence would constitute an “arbitrary deprivation of the right to life” and a “blatant violation of international law.”
The fact-finding committee had previously addressed Sharifeh’s case in its official report to the UN Human Rights Council (A/HRC/58/CRP.1), documenting serious violations in the process of her arrest and trial. The committee has also issued several public statements warning about the risk of Sharifeh’s execution, describing it as a clear example of the suppression of women and labor activists in Iran.
The Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi welcomed the committee’s stance and announced that it will continue to pursue the case and amplify Sharifeh’s voice in international forums.
