Four well-digging workers were exposed to gas poisoning while cleaning a septic well in Mashhad, resulting in the deaths of three workers.
According to Kolbarnews, on the evening of Monday, November 25, 2024, in the Panjtan Street area of Mashhad, four workers were poisoned by toxic gases while cleaning a septic well. Three of them lost their lives, and one was transferred to the hospital.
A labor rights activist in Mashhad explained that the incident occurred while the workers were cleaning a septic well at a commercial unit. Two workers who initially entered the well inhaled toxic gases from the sewage and were poisoned. Two other workers who attempted to rescue them also succumbed to the same fate.
Experts identified the cause of the incident as inhalation of toxic gases, such as methane and hydrogen sulfide, commonly found in wells. These gases pose serious risks to individuals working in such environments.
It is worth noting that in 2023, 2,115 workers (2,094 men and 21 women) lost their lives in workplace accidents across Iran. This figure reflects an 11.3% increase compared to the previous year, which recorded 1,900 fatalities.
Iran ranks 102nd globally in workplace safety standards, a very low position.
