Mahabad Prison; Suspicious Death of a Political Prisoner on the Day of His Scheduled Release

Qader Rasoulpour, a political prisoner, died under suspicious circumstances on Friday, July 18, 2025, just hours before his scheduled release from Mahabad Central Prison. His death occurred after he had completed his six-month prison sentence.

According to Kolbarnews, after several hours of delay in his release, the prison authorities informed the family that Qader Rasoulpour had “died during a shower due to a seizure.”

His family and relatives have categorically denied any underlying health conditions or physical problems. They stated that during a family visit two days earlier, Qader was in good spirits and spoke of his upcoming freedom. His body has been transferred to the Forensic Medicine Department in Urmia, and his family is demanding a thorough investigation into the exact cause of death.

Qader Rasoulpour, aged 53, was a native of Mahabad. He had previously been a member of the Komala Party from 1984 to 1990 and was subsequently sentenced to eight years in prison due to his political activities. In total, Rasoulpour had spent nearly nine years in the prisons of the Islamic Republic. In his most recent case, he was arrested on Saturday, February 8, 2025, during a raid by security forces on his home in the Posht-Tapeh neighborhood of Mahabad.

His formal charge was “propaganda against the regime,” and the court ultimately sentenced him to six months in prison, a sentence that had officially ended on the day of his death.

Judicial and prison authorities in Mahabad have yet to issue any official statement regarding the suspicious death of this political prisoner.
