The governments of Spain, Norway, and Ireland announced today, May 22, 2024, that they officially recognize Palestine as a country.
According to Kolbarnews, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, Jonas Gahr Støre, the Prime Minister of Norway, announced in an official statement that his country will recognize Palestine on May 28. The Norwegian Prime Minister, while inviting other countries to follow this action, emphasized: “The ongoing war in Gaza has clearly shown that achieving lasting peace and stability in the region requires resolving the Palestinian issue.”
Following Norway’s action, the governments of Spain and Ireland also officially announced that they recognize Palestine. Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, announced this news in his speech in the Congress of Deputies. Similarly, the Irish government declared in an official press conference that it recognizes Palestine.
This action has been widely welcomed by supporters of Palestinian rights worldwide. However, the Israeli regime has strongly condemned this move, stating that it “will lead to more terrorism and instability in the region and endanger any prospects for peace.” Additionally, Israel has asked its ambassador to leave Norway in protest.
Reports indicate that Spain played a leading role in this initiative and encouraged its European partners to recognize Palestine.
It is still unclear whether Belgium and Slovenia will join this trend.
These developments represent a significant step towards the international recognition of Palestine and could contribute to advancing peace in the region and resolving the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
