Sanandaj: Labor Activist Amjad Geryakhiz Transferred to Prison to Serve Sentence

Amjad Geryakhiz, a labor activist from the city of Sanandaj, has been transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison to serve a six-month discretionary prison sentence.

According to Kolbarnews, on Monday July 7, 2025, Amjad Geryakhiz, a labor activist from Sanandaj and a member of the “No to Execution” campaign, was transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison to serve his six-month discretionary prison sentence.

The First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj had previously, on June 7, 2025, sentenced this labor activist to six months of discretionary imprisonment and two years of suspended imprisonment. This sentence was issued following his violent arrest during the general strike of the people of Kurdistan.

Geryakhiz was arrested on January 8, 2025, while participating in a protest strike against the issuance of execution sentences for Warish Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, on one of the streets of Sanandaj. At the time of arrest, he was subjected to severe torture and was held for 35 days in a security detention center, without access to medicine, a lawyer, or contact with family.

The main charge brought against him was “encouraging and inciting bazaar merchants to strike” and participation in organizing these protests.

Despite his temporary release on bail, Geryakhiz was summoned to court multiple times, and was eventually informed that he must appear before the Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj on May 13, 2025, for the continuation of his case. The first hearing of the case had taken place on March 2, 3025.

Amjad Geryakhiz is an active member of the Sanandaj Construction Workers’ Trade Union and has a history of arrest, torture, and threats following his union, civil, and protest activities. He was previously arrested during the nationwide protests after the killing of Jina Amini, during International Workers’ Day, and in response to the execution of Ramin Hossein Panahi.

Reports also indicate that his wife, Arezou Sabouri, was threatened by security agencies at the time of Amjad’s arrest.
