Birjand; Death and Injury of Two Baloch Sukhtbars Following Military Forces’ Use of Spike Strips

Due to the actions of military forces at the Sahlabad checkpoint who deployed spike strips in the path of a Sukhtbari vehicle, one Baloch Sukhtbar lost his life and another was injured.

According to Kolbarnews, on the evening of Friday, April 11, 2025, in the Sahlabad area, military forces at the Sahlabad checkpoint used tire-puncturing spike strips, causing a Sukhtbari vehicle to overturn. As a result, one Sukhtbar was killed and another was severely injured.

The deceased was identified as Hassan Chamanpira (Brahui), approximately 30 years old, son of Rahim, originally from the village of Kartabad in Zirkuh County, Qaen, and a resident of Birjand. He was the father of three children.

News sources report that the checkpoint forces first shined a spotlight into the driver’s eyes to disorient him, then threw the spike strip onto the vehicle’s path, causing the vehicle to overturn. The vehicle’s passenger died instantly, and the driver was injured.

Sukhtbari considered one of the unconventional and dangerous occupations that many Baloch people in Balochistan are forced to engage in due to the lack of suitable and stable employment opportunities. Accidents, vehicle overturns, and direct shootings by military and security forces are some of the dangers that threaten the lives of Sukhtbars. According to reports by Baloch activists, in 2024, at least 240 Baloch Sukhtbars lost their lives due to shootings by military forces, traffic accidents, and vehicle fires, while 135 others were injured in these incidents, 19 of whom were children.
