Due to the provision of unsafe food to workers at a subsidiary of the Bakhtar Petrochemical Holding in Asaluyeh at the end of last week, 180 workers were poisoned, and one worker lost his life.
According to Kolbarnews , 180 workers from the Kavian, Rayan Polymer, and D-Polymer Arya petrochemical plants in Asaluyeh suffered severe poisoning after consuming contaminated food. This tragic incident, which occurred last week, led to the hospitalization of dozens of workers, and unfortunately, the death of one of them.
Reports indicate that the main cause of this widespread poisoning was the consumption of contaminated food provided by the contractor responsible for supplying meals to the workers. This incident highlights the lack of adequate oversight on the quality of food provided to workers in these areas.
According to one of the workers, the incident unfolded as follows: On Wednesday morning of last week, scrambled eggs were served for breakfast, after which symptoms of poisoning such as fever, chills, and vomiting began to appear among the workers around 1 PM. Due to suspicions about the contamination and poor quality of the breakfast ingredients, 180 workers from the Kavian, Rayan Polymer, and D-Polymer Arya petrochemical plants were affected. The demand for medical services was so high, and the available resources so inadequate, that many sick and poisoned workers had to seek treatment in medical facilities in Jam, Kangan, and some even in Fars province.
The informed worker added: “The death of one of our colleagues happened as follows: Mr. Ramin Golestani, a contract worker in the electrical department at Kavian Petrochemical, who was from Kazerun, unfortunately, after returning to his hometown due to his critical condition, was hospitalized. On Friday, his kidneys failed, and he passed away that night.”
It should be noted that a total of 2,115 workers (2,094 men and 21 women) lost their lives in work-related accidents in the year 1402 (2023-2024), which represents an 11.3% increase compared to the same period the previous year, where 1,900 workers died.
Iran ranks 102nd globally in terms of workplace safety, a very low ranking.
