A Baloch worker lost his life after falling from the sixth floor of a building in Zahedan due to inadequate workplace safety measures.
According to Kolbarnews, on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, a Baloch worker, identified as Abdolghaffar Rakhshani, approximately 32 years old, married, and father of one child, from the Keshavarz area of Zahedan, fell to his death at a construction site on Mazari Street. The accident occurred when he slipped while using an elevator shaft lacking proper railings and safety barriers.
Reports indicate that Abdolghaffar fell into the elevator shaft from the sixth floor while working, highlighting the absence of essential safety measures at the construction site.
The lack of adequate oversight and enforcement of workplace safety, especially at construction sites, remains a significant contributor to such tragic incidents. Employers and contractors are legally obligated to ensure that all safety equipment, such as railings, elevator barriers, helmets, and protective clothing, is provided and that safety standards are continuously monitored. Failure to comply with these requirements places workers’ lives at severe risk.
In 2023, a total of 2,115 workers (2,094 men and 21 women) lost their lives due to work-related incidents in Iran, marking an 11.3% increase compared to the previous year, when 1,900 fatalities were recorded.
Globally, Iran ranks 102nd in workplace safety standards, reflecting its alarmingly low position. This ranking underscores the precarious conditions for workers in the country, with many losing their lives each year due to the absence of proper safety protocols.
