Leyla Hosseinzadeh, a student union activist, has been sentenced to a 100 million toman fine in place of serving the remainder of her five-year prison sentence.
According to Kolbarnews, Leyla Hosseinzadeh řannounced that following the confirmation by the Forensic Medical Commission of her permanent inability to endure imprisonment, the remainder of her five-year sentence, which was related to a 2018 case, was converted to a fine of 100 million tomans. She stated that the case was officially closed after the fine was paid.
Leyla Hosseinzadeh, a student of Tehran University and an advocate for student rights, still faces two other legal cases. She was previously arrested along with other students during the January 2018 protests and was released on bail after 16 days, on January 18, 2018.
In June 2019, Branch 36 of the Tehran Appeals Court sentenced her to 30 months in prison for “assembly and collusion against national security” and an additional year for “propaganda against the regime.” She also received a two-year travel ban as part of her supplementary punishment. Participation in the birthday celebration of Mohammad Sharifi-Moghadam, a Gonabadi dervish, and singing the song “Khoun-e Arghavanha” (The Blood of the Arghavans) were cited as examples of her alleged offenses.
In August 2019, she was arrested to serve her sentence but was later released under a judicial order due to her inability to endure further imprisonment.
In a subsequent case, for the same act of attending Sharifi-Moghadam’s birthday, Hosseinzadeh was sentenced in March 2021 by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to five years in prison and a two-year ban from social media activities. This sentence was upheld by Branch 36 of the Appeals Court in December 2021.
Hosseinzadeh was once again arrested in August 2022, following a violent confrontation by security forces outside her home. She was ultimately released on bail in January 2023.
Throughout her activism, Leyla Hosseinzadeh has been repeatedly arrested and sentenced for her involvement in student union activities.
