Germany; Support of Germany’s Largest Trade Union for Sharifeh Mohammadi

Germany’s largest trade union, DGB, has issued an official statement calling for the immediate cancellation of the death sentence against Sharifeh Mohammadi, her unconditional release, and an end to the repression of independent labor activists and human rights defenders in Iran.

According to Kolbarnews, on Friday, September 5, 2025, DGB released an official statement announcing that the union has joined the global wave of protests against the issuance of Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence. In the statement, DGB declared:
“We demand the immediate cancellation of the death sentence against Sharifeh Mohammadi, her unconditional release, and the end of repression of independent labor activists and human rights defenders in Iran.”
DGB, considered the largest labor organization in Germany with more than six million members, emphasized the importance of international solidarity to stop what it described as an unjust ruling and called on the global community to increase pressure on the Iranian government.
The Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi described this support as an important step in expanding international solidarity and strengthening global pressure on the Iranian authorities.
The campaign stated that the responsibility for canceling the death sentence and securing her release lies entirely with the Iranian government and highlighted that this demand is now being raised worldwide by labor unions, human rights organizations, and international institutions.

Sharifeh Mohammadi, an Iranian labor activist, was arrested in December 2023 in Rasht by security forces. According to the campaign, she was subjected to solitary confinement, denied access to legal representation, and prevented from contacting her family. In July 2024, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Rasht sentenced her to death on charges of armed rebellion (baghi), citing her past association with a labor organization.
In October 2024, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling, citing procedural flaws and lack of sufficient evidence, and ordered a retrial. However, in February 2025, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in Rasht once again issued a death sentence, despite international criticism and concerns about violations of due process. In August 2025, Branch 39 of the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence.

Since the verdict, there has been a growing wave of global condemnation. International organizations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Center for Human Rights in Iran, have all criticized the ruling and demanded her immediate release. Several trade unions, including the French labor unions and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), have also called for urgent action to stop the execution.
