Protest Letter Sent to Iran’s New President
According to Kolbarnews, the FNV (Federation of Dutch Trade Unions) has issued a strong protest against the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a 45-year-old labor activist, by an Iranian court on July 4, 2024. Mohammadi, an industrial engineer and mother, was arrested in December 2023 and held without contact with her family. She faced charges of “armed rebellion against the state,” linked to her alleged past involvement with the legally operating Labor Unions Assistance Coordination Committee (LUACC).
Call for Immediate Action
The FNV, aligning with international labor organizations from France, Denmark, and Sweden, has sent a protest letter to newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran. The union is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Mohammadi and the reversal of her death sentence. The letter also calls for protection against further mistreatment while she remains in custody.
Labor Rights Under Threat
Despite Iran’s membership in the International Labour Organization (ILO), which guarantees workers’ rights to organize and strike, the country continues to treat peaceful labor activism as a threat to national security. Independent unions are not recognized, and activists face severe consequences, including the death penalty.
Ongoing Vigilance
The FNV remains committed to upholding international labor standards and supporting the Iranian labor movement. The organization, together with other international unions, will continue to monitor Sharifeh Mohammadi’s case closely, advocating for her rights and safety.
the FNV’s actions underscore the urgent need for global solidarity in the fight for labor rights and justice, particularly in repressive environments.
