Chabahar: Drowning and Disappearance of a Baloch Sukhtbar Following a Motorboat Sinking

A motorboat carrying fuel sank in the Kalani area of Chabahar County, leading to the drowning of two Sukhtbars. While one of them was rescued by a fishing vessel, the boat’s captain remains missing ten days after the incident.

According to Kolbarnews, on Friday, December 6, 2024, a Sukhtbari boat sank in the waters of Kalani near Chabahar. While one Sukhtbar was saved by a fishing boat, the captain, identified as Qasem Hot, a 31-year-old married man with a three-year-old child from Baluchi village in Chabahar, remains missing. No information is available about the rescued individual at the time of reporting.

The report further states that Qasem Hot remains missing in the waters of the Sea of Balochistan, and despite ten days having passed since the incident, no governmental body or organization has stepped in to search for him.
Local residents, Sukhtbars, and fishermen, with limited resources and no government support, are continuing efforts to find him.

Sukhtbari considered one of the unconventional and dangerous jobs that many Baloch people in Balochistan are forced to undertake due to the lack of suitable and sustainable employment opportunities. Accidents, vehicle rollovers, and direct shootings by military and security forces are some of the dangers that threaten the lives of Sukhtbars. According to reports from Baloch activists, in the first six months of 2024, at least 133 Baloch Sukhtbars lost their lives due to shootings by military forces, road accidents, and vehicle fires, while 80 others were injured in these incidents, including 9 children.
