Tehran: Supreme Court Rejects Appeal for Retrial of Pakhshan Azizi

The Ninth Branch of Iran’s Supreme Court has rejected the appeal for the retrial of Pakhshan Azizi, a political activist imprisoned in Evin Prison.

According to Kolbarnews, Pakhshan Azizi’s request to overturn her death sentence was denied by the Supreme Court on January 25, 2025, and her lawyers were officially notified of the decision on February 5, 2025.

Her lawyer, Amir Raeesian, stated that the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal on the grounds that the legal objections raised were substantive rather than procedural. However, he emphasized that the defense team will file a new appeal.

On July 24, 2024, Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, sentenced Pakhshan Azizi to death on charges including “Baghi” (armed rebellion against the state). The verdict was upheld on January 9, 2025, by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court.

Azizi’s trial took place on May 29, 2024. She was arrested on August 4, 2023, by Tehran’s Intelligence Ministry forces and transferred to Evin Prison.

In February 2024, she was formally indicted in Branch 5 of Evin’s Security Prosecutor’s Office, and her case was forwarded to Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran.
