In a letter dated July 24, 2024, the Spanish Trade Union Confederation of Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) expressed its strong opposition to the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, an independent labor activist. The letter also declared solidarity with the global campaign protesting this verdict. Addressed to Reza Zabib, the Iranian Ambassador to Spain, the letter was signed by Cristina Faciaben Lacorte, Secretary of International Cooperation and Migration for the Workers’ Commissions of Spain.
The letter states: “We, the Workers’ Commissions of Spain, stand in solidarity with the global campaign protesting the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, an Iranian labor activist arrested in December 2023 in Rasht, northern Iran.” It continues by highlighting Mohammadi’s civic activities, her biography, and the harsh conditions she has endured during her detention.
In another section, the letter mentions: “On the global stage, many of us, including national and international unions and Amnesty International, have expressed our complete opposition to this sentence and demand its immediate annulment. We, the Workers’ Commissions, together with the Iranian Association for Human Rights in Spain, join the global movement to condemn this verdict, expressing our deep concern and fear for Sharifeh Mohammadi’s life.”
Sharifeh Mohammadi is currently incarcerated in the central prison of Rasht (Lakan). Seven months after her arrest, the judicial and security apparatus of the Islamic Republic charged her with “rebellion,” leading to her death sentence in the preliminary court. Mohammadi, 45, from Mianeh in East Azerbaijan and residing in Rasht, was arrested on December 5, 2023, and spent several months in solitary confinement until January 2024. During her detention, she was subjected to severe psychological and physical pressure to extract forced confessions and was deprived of her rights to phone calls and family visits.
