Saqqez: Labor Activist Osman Esmaeili Released from Prison

Osman Esmaeili, a well-known labor movement activist, has been released from Saqqez prison after completing his sentence.

According to Kolbarnews, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Osman Esmaeili, a prominent labor activist, was freed from Saqqez prison following the end of his sentence. Osman Esmaeili was initially arrested on February 8, 2023, without a judicial warrant by security forces in Saqqez. He was later released on April 17, 2023.

In August 2023, Osman Esmaeili was sentenced by the First Branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Saqqez, presided over by Judge Mostafaei. He received 31 months and 15 days of imprisonment for “membership in Komala” and an additional 7 months and 15 days for “propaganda against the regime” due to his participation and speech at the funeral of Jina Amini.

Based on this ruling and considering mitigating circumstances under Article 38 of the Islamic Penal Code (2013), such as Esmaeili’s age and marital status, as well as Article 6 of the Law on Reducing Punitive Sentences (2020), which refers to Article 37 of the Penal Code, his sentence was reduced to 16 months of imprisonment, including time already served.

On November 13, 2023, Osman Esmaeili was detained again after reporting to the Second Branch of the Enforcement Office at the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Saqqez to serve his sentence.

Osman Esmaeili has faced prior arrests and legal actions due to his activism in the labor movement.
