Hamid Moradi, an environmental activist and director of the “Shenay Nojin Kurdistan” Environmental Association, has died at Hospital in Sanandaj due to severe burn injuries.

According to Kolbarnews, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, following a large wildfire and firefighting operation on Mount Abidar in Sanandaj, Hamid Moradi, along with four other civil and environmental activists Mohsen Hosseini-Panahi, Khabat Amini, Chiako Yousefinejad, and Seyed Mostafa Hajir, suffered severe burns and were transferred to Hospital.
According to the report, Mr. Hamid Moradi, who had been admitted to the intensive care unit, passed away early this morning due to the severity of his injuries.
The wildfire on Mount Abidar was eventually contained through the tireless efforts of local volunteers and environmental activists.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Widespread and systematic wildfires in Kurdistan’s forests and pastures have become an annual phenomenon, yet the lack of planning and inadequate equipment from governmental institutions has forced citizens and environmental activists to confront the crisis each year with limited resources.
This situation has already claimed the lives of dozens of environmental activists and injures many others annually.
Despite state media claims that “five fully-equipped firefighting teams” were deployed, local and informed sources state that the fire was effectively extinguished by volunteer civilians and environmental and civil society activists.
