The life of Mohammad Taghavi, a political prisoner held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, is at risk due to a hunger strike and lack of medical care.
According to Kolbarnews, political prisoner Mohammad Taghavi, who has been in Ward 209 of Evin Prison since July 1, 2024, has been on a hunger strike for over a month. His demands include being transferred to the general ward and protesting the severe torture of his Afghan cellmate and the fabrication of charges against himself and his co-defendants.
A reliable source reported that on Sunday, October 6, 2024, Mohammad Taghavi was transferred from Ward 209 to court in a frail condition to attend a trial. According to the same source, he appeared so weak that those around him were shocked by his appearance. Four months ago, he was transferred from the general ward to Ward 209 on the orders of Judge Iman Afshari to be subjected to torture and harassment in an attempt to force a confession. He shares a cell with two other prisoners, including an Afghan inmate who has been severely tortured and is in a critical condition.
It is worth noting that the hearing for Seyed Mohammad Taghavi in a case shared with six other political prisoners, including his brother Mojtaba Taghavi, Babak Alipour, Vahid Bani-Amrian, Pouya Ghobadi, Ali Akbar Daneshvar-Kar, and Abolhasan Montazer, was held on Sunday, October 6, 2024. However, Taghavi refused to attend the trial, deeming the court illegal and describing his detention in the security ward as inhumane. He also refused to sign the court records. Taghavi and four other prisoners in the case face charges of “armed rebellion” and the possibility of the death penalty.
This political prisoner had previously spent four years in prison during the 1980s and has been arrested multiple times in recent years.
