Dehgolan: Temporary Release of Sohaila Motaei After Legal Proceedings

Sohaila Motaei, a civil and women’s rights activist from Dehgolan, who had been arrested in connection with the strike by shopkeepers and merchants in Kurdish cities protesting the issuance of execution sentences, has been temporarily released on bail after legal proceedings were initiated.

According to Kolbarnews, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, Sohaila Motaei, a civil and women’s rights activist from Dehgolan, was released on bail following the formation of a legal case. She had been arrested by security forces on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, and transferred to an unknown location.

Sohaila Motaei is among the detained participants of the nationwide protests and had previously been sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison by the Dehgolan Criminal Court. If upheld during the appeal process, under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment 18 months of imprisonment will be enforced.

According to the court ruling issued by Branch 2 of the Dehgolan Criminal Court, she was convicted of the following charges: Disrupting public order: 18 months. Spreading false information to disturb public opinion: 13 months. Resisting law enforcement officers: 5 months. Propaganda against the regime: 9 months.
If the ruling is confirmed in the appeal process, the 18-month sentence will be applied under Article 134.

Sohaila Motaei had previously been arrested on October 1, 2022, during nationwide protests in Dehgolan and was temporarily released on October 17, 2022, after posting a 400-million-toman bail. She was again arrested on November 12, 2022, and, after the interrogation period, was transferred to the Sanandaj Rehabilitation Center.
