Amnesty International Austria has launched a petition calling for the immediate release of Sharifeh Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights defender sentenced to death for her peaceful activism in defense of labor and women’s rights.

According to Kolbarnews, the petition highlights that Sharifeh Mohammadi was arbitrarily arrested on December 5, 2023, by Ministry of Intelligence agents, and subsequently subjected to torture and ill-treatment. Following a 30-minute trial that failed to meet international fair trial standards, she was convicted and sentenced to death in June 2024 by Iran’s Revolutionary Court on the charge of “armed rebellion against the state” (baghi). In August 2025, the Supreme Court upheld this death sentence, placing her at imminent risk of execution.
Amnesty International Austria stressed that Sharifeh Mohammadi is being punished solely for her peaceful human rights activities, including advocating for workers’ rights, women’s rights, and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. The petition also noted that, since the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising in 2022, Iranian authorities have increasingly weaponized the death penalty as a tool of repression.
The organization is urging the public to sign the petition and demand that Iran’s judiciary immediately overturn her sentence and release her. The appeal is addressed to Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, head of Iran’s judiciary, through the Iranian embassy in Vienna.
