The West Azerbaijan Court of Appeals has upheld a 15-year prison sentence for Rezgar Beikzadeh Babamiri, one of the detainees from the 2022 nationwide protests in Bukan.

According to Kolbarnews, the sentence issued against Babamiri has been confirmed in full. His daughter, Zhino Beikzadeh Babamiri, announced in a post that the appellate court upheld the verdict and that it has recently been formally delivered to her father in prison by the Urmia Judiciary’s Sentence Enforcement Branch.
Babamiri was initially sentenced by Branch One of the Urmia Criminal Court to 15 years in prison on charges of “complicity in murder during the 2022 nationwide protests.” His trial took place on December 24, 2023.
In addition to this case, Babamiri faces further charges including “rebellion (baghi)” in a separate case currently being reviewed by the Urmia Revolutionary Court.
Rezgar Beikzadeh Babamiri, a farmer from Bukan, was arrested in April 2023 for his alleged involvement in the 2022 protests.
In the past five years, the number of citizens arrested for expressing their views in Iran has doubled compared to the previous five-year period, reflecting a growing pattern of repression, particularly during times of widespread protest.
