Rezgar Bigzadeh Babamiri, a political prisoner from Bukan, has been charged with offenses such as “rebellion” and “waging war against God” (moharebeh), charges that could potentially lead to a death sentence. He was arrested by security forces on April 17, 2023, during nationwide protests and is currently being held in Urmia Prison.
According to Kolbarnews, Rezgar Bigzadeh Babamiri has been in detention for 622 days. His daughter, Zhino Bigzadeh Babamiri, provided details about her father’s case, stating that he was arrested by security forces in Bukan on April 17, 2023, for aiding those injured in the nationwide protests of 2022. He was subjected to approximately four months of torture in detention centers in Bukan and Urmia to extract forced confessions. Eventually, he was transferred to Urmia Prison.
The indictment against him includes charges such as waging war against God (moharebeh), rebellion (baghi), assembly and collusion against national security, financing terrorism, propaganda against the regime, espionage and collaboration with hostile states, possession of satellite internet equipment (Starlink), possession of illegal weapons, membership in unauthorized groups, and masterminding an assassination. The case has been filed by Branch 10 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Urmia and referred to the Revolutionary and Criminal Courts of Urmia.
Zhino Bigzadeh further revealed that Rezgar Bigzadeh’s case is connected with other defendants, and on Monday, December 23, 2024, a court session was held in Urmia Criminal Court regarding the charge of “masterminding the murder of a security force member.” She emphasized that there is no evidence implicating her father in the killing.
Another part of his case is under review in Branch 1 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court. In a recent letter to the presiding judge of the aforementioned branch, Rezgar Bigzadeh protested against issues such as 133 days of interrogation, holding court sessions electronically, the court preventing his lawyer from attending hearings, and the lack of investigation into his complaint regarding abuse and torture during interrogations.
Rezgar Bigzadeh Babamiri, a resident of Bukan, was a farmer before his arrest.
