Tehran: Sentencing of Leila Hosseinzadeh to Imprisonment

Leila Hosseinzadeh, a student union activist, has been sentenced to imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.

According to Kolbarnews, Leila Hosseinzadeh was convicted of appearing in public without a hijab and “propaganda against the regime.” She stated on social media that she was unaware of the specifics of her sentence, adding, “I have no hope for appeals or other legal processes. I will wait for the case to be referred to the enforcement of sentences.”

Leila Hosseinzadeh has faced multiple arrests and legal actions over the years:

December 2017 Protests: She was arrested during the protests and released after 16 days on January 18, 2018, on bail.

June 2019 Sentence: The Tehran Court of Appeals sentenced her to 30 months of imprisonment for “assembly and collusion against national security,” one year for “propaganda against the regime,” and a two-year travel ban. She was accused of participating in a birthday gathering for jailed Gonabadi dervish Mohammad Sharifi Moghadam, where she sang a political anthem. She was arrested in August 2019 to serve this sentence but was later released under judicial clemency.

March 2021 Sentence: For another case, also related to her participation in the Gonabadi dervish’s birthday, she was sentenced to five years of imprisonment and a two-year ban on social media activity. The Court of Appeals upheld this in December 2021.

August 2022 Arrest: She was violently detained outside her home and later released on bail in January 2023.

Leila Hosseinzadeh remains a prominent figure in student activism and a frequent target of Iran’s security apparatus. Her sentencing reflects ongoing government repression of activists and dissenters.
