Taftan: Arrest of a Social Activist Protesting Gold Mining by Security Forces

Karimbakhsh Kurdi-Tamandani, a Baloch social activist, was arrested by security forces in Taftan after protesting against gold mining in the region.

According to Kolbarnews, on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Karimbakhsh Kurdi-Tamandani, a Baloch social activist and founder of the “Save Taftan Nature” campaign, was arrested by agents from the Khash Intelligence Office and Taftan law enforcement forces.
This occurred after a solidarity gathering of local residents at the mosque in Koteh Bala village, Taftan County, where Kurdi-Tamandani delivered a speech and read a statement. He was arrested without a judicial warrant and taken to an undisclosed location.

The report states that at 3 p.m., agents from the Khash Intelligence Office, along with military forces from the Noukabad checkpoint in Taftan, arrived at the solidarity gathering. After Kurdi-Tamandani’s speech, they detained him without presenting any legal documentation and transferred him to an unknown location.

Karimbakhsh Kurdi-Tamandani is a social and environmental activist and writer from Taftan County. In 2022, he launched the “Save Taftan Nature” campaign to protect the beautiful nature of Taftan from the harm caused by gold miners, mining companies, and other entities exploiting the region’s poverty.
