Mojgan Kavousi, a former political prisoner, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Second Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Sari after the Supreme Court accepted her request for retrial.
According to Kolbarnews, quoting Maziar Tataei, Mojgan Kavousi’s defense attorney, she has been sentenced to one year in prison. Tataei announced on his personal page that following the acceptance of the retrial by the 39th Branch of the Supreme Court, the Second Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Sari issued a verdict reducing Kavousi’s sentence from 61 months to 12 months.
On August 9, the Supreme Court accepted Kavousi’s request for a retrial, and her case was referred to a parallel court for review.
In December 2022, Mojgan Kavousi was sentenced by the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Sari to eight months in prison for “propaganda activities against the regime,” 18 months for “insulting the leadership,” and 39 months for “assembly and collusion against national security.”
She was sent to Tonekabon Prison in December 2023 to serve her sentence. In late June 2024, her prison sentence was converted to a semi-open regime, and she was released from Tonekabon Prison.
Kavousi has a history of being detained and imprisoned for her activism. She was previously arrested during the November 2019 protests and sentenced to prison. She was eventually released from Kachouei Prison in Karaj in January 2022 after serving 20 months.
