Sanandaj: Hunger Strike by Pouya Javaheri, Detainee of the Jina Revolutionary Movement

Pouya Javaheri, a resident of Kamiyaran and one of the detainees from the 2022 nationwide protests, remains in Sanandaj Prison after more than 25 months in detention. He has initiated a hunger strike in protest against his ongoing uncertainty.

According to Kolbarnews, Pouya Javaheri has been held in Sanandaj Prison for over 760 days without any clear resolution to his case. Mustafa Ahmadian, his attorney, announced yesterday:
“My client, Pouya Javaheri, has gone on a hunger strike to protest his prolonged detention in Sanandaj Prison.”

Pouya Javaheri was detained on November 29, 2022, after being summoned to the Kamiyaran IRGC intelligence office. By late February 2023, he was transferred to Kamiyaran Prison and then moved to Sanandaj Prison in early September 2023.

In late 2022, the Kurdistan Judiciary Chief reported that “moharebeh” (enmity against God) was among the charges leveled against Javaheri.

In August 2023, his case was referred to Branch 1 of the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court, with charges including:

Moharebeh through the alleged intentional killing of a military personnel member, membership in opposition groups, propaganda against the regime, assault and intentional injury of several military officers.

The Kurdistan Provincial Judiciary claimed that Pouya Javaheri allegedly shot at police and security forces with a pellet gun during the protests in Kamiyaran on November 15, 2022, resulting in the death of a Basij member, Reza Azarbar, and injuries to 30 other military and law enforcement personnel.

On March 12, 2023, under heavy security measures, Javaheri was taken handcuffed and shackled to 12-Metri Street in Kamiyaran, where security interrogators allegedly coerced him into participating in a staged reenactment, portraying him as responsible for “participating in protests and shooting at suppression forces.”

Pouya Javaheri is a road construction worker. According to his father, during November 21–23, Pouya was working on a municipal project in the village of Tilkou, near Kamiyaran. He stayed at his father-in-law’s house in the same village on November 24–25.

His family has provided sworn affidavits signed by 50 to 70 villagers confirming Pouya’s presence in Tilkou on those dates.

Javaheri is among the many detainees from the 2022 protests who face moharebeh charges, which are increasingly used by Revolutionary Courts to issue harsh, often retaliatory sentences designed to intimidate dissenters, including the death penalty.
