Nazarabad: Mashallah Karami Sentenced to Over 8 Years in Prison and Additional Punishments

Mashallah Karami, the father of executed protester Mohammad Mehdi Karami, has been sentenced by the Criminal Court Branch Two in Nazarabad County to eight years and ten months in prison.

According to Kolbarnews, Mashallah Karami has been sentenced to imprisonment and other penalties. A recent verdict issued by Branch 102 of the Criminal Court in Nazarabad, and delivered to this detained citizen in Karaj Central Prison, sentenced him to eight years and ten months in prison, a fine of 1.9 billion tomans, and the confiscation of his assets on charges of “money laundering and acquiring illicit wealth.”

Previously, in another part of his case, Karami was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to five years in prison for “assembly and collusion to commit a crime against national security” and one year in prison for “propaganda against the regime.”

Ali Sharifzadeh, Karami’s defense attorney, had previously stated that the security charges against his client were not consistent with his actions. He added, “Mr. Karami only distributed charitable food donations, which were funded by public contributions. This was presented to the court, but it was not properly considered. Additionally, my client’s assets have no connection to the security charges against him.”

The hearing for Mashallah Karami’s charges took place on April 23, 2024.

In late March 2024, Mr. Sharifzadeh Ordakani, Karami’s attorney, mentioned that the indictment against his client included four charges: charges under Article 500 (propaganda activities against the regime) and Article 610 (assembly and collusion to commit a crime against national security) were addressed in the Revolutionary Court in Karaj, while charges under Article 2 of the Law on Intensifying Punishment (acquiring illicit wealth) and Article 9 of the Anti-Money Laundering Law were examined in the Criminal Court in Nazarabad.

Mashallah Karami was arrested by security forces on August 22, 2023. At the time of his arrest, security agents confiscated all electronic devices and froze the family’s bank cards.

On October 28, 2023, he was transferred from the Intelligence Ministry’s detention center to Karaj Central Prison. After being held in quarantine for three months, he was finally moved to Ward 15 of this prison.

It is worth noting that on the morning of Saturday, January 7, 2023, the death sentence of Mohammad Mehdi Karami, who was arrested during the nationwide protests in 2022, was carried out.
