Mahmoud Mehrabi, a 35-year-old political prisoner, has been sentenced to death by the Fifth Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Isfahan on charges of “corruption on earth.”
According to Kolbarnews, the death sentence of this civil activist has been communicated to his lawyers, but it has not been officially notified to them through the Thena system yet.
Mehrabi was confronted with 187 charges, including “corruption on earth,” due to his activities on Instagram, “propaganda against the regime,” “incitement of military and law enforcement forces to neglect their duties,” “incitement of people to war and massacre,” and “insulting the founder and leader of the Islamic Republic,” by the Second Branch of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office of Mobarakeh County in Isfahan province in March last year.
He also faced charges of “publishing criminal content in the media” and “insulting the imams and sanctities” in December last year. No information has been released about the timing of Mehrabi’s execution.
Human rights groups have strongly condemned this sentence and called for its cancellation.
Amnesty International stated in a statement: “We are deeply concerned about the issuance of the death sentence for Mahmoud Mehrabi. This sentence is unfair and contrary to human rights. We urge Iranian authorities to revoke this sentence and immediately and unconditionally release Mehrabi.”
Human rights activists inside Iran have also urged people to support Mehrabi by signing petitions and holding gatherings.
