Evin Prison: Warisha Moradi Sentenced to Death

Warisha Moradi, a political activist detained in Evin Prison, has been sentenced to death on charges of “armed rebellion” (baghi).

According to Kolbarnews, Warisha Moradi, a political activist from Sanandaj and a member of the Free East Kurdistan Women’s Society (KJAR), was sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, presided over by Judge Abolqasem Salavati. The verdict was issued on Sunday, November 10, 2024.

The first court session regarding Moradi’s charges took place on June 16, 2024, in Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court under Judge Salavati, where she was accused of “armed rebellion” due to alleged membership in a Kurdish opposition group. Subsequent hearings were postponed in August and September due to Moradi’s refusal to appear in court and the absence of a prosecutor’s representative. The final session took place on October 5, 2024.

Moradi had previously been indicted by Branch 5 of the Prosecutor’s Office of Tehran on charges of “armed rebellion.” On October 10, 2024, marking the World Day Against the Death Penalty, Moradi initiated a 20-day hunger strike in protest against the death penalty and its implementation in Iran.

She was originally arrested on August 1, 2023, by security forces at the entrance to Sanandaj. After 13 days, she was transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence detention center, known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, and eventually moved to the women’s ward on December 26, 2023, following the completion of her interrogation.
