Eighty-five political prisoners, both male and female, in wards 4, 8, and the women’s ward of Evin Prison, have gone on a hunger strike to protest the death sentence of labor activist Sharifeh Mohammadi.
According to Kolbarnews, following the inhumane death sentence issued against Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist, 30 female political prisoners and 55 male political prisoners in wards 4 and 8 of Evin Prison joined the “Campaign to Support Sharifeh Mohammadi” by declaring a hunger strike.
The death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi has sparked a wave of reactions among many activists and political and civil society figures.
On Thursday, July 4, 2024, the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Rasht tried Sharifeh Mohammadi on charges of “rebellion” and sentenced her to death.
Ms. Mohammadi was arrested on December 5, 2023, and held in solitary confinement for several months. At the time of her arrest, her charge was announced as “propaganda against the regime,” which was later escalated to the severe charge of “rebellion” for unfounded reasons. Sharifeh Mohammadi was subjected to severe physical and psychological pressures to extract confessions against herself. She was deprived of visits with her family, especially her child, and was not allowed to make phone calls for a long time. The Ministry of Intelligence subjected her to such severe physical pressure and repeated mistreatment that prison officials protested against her beating due to fears for her safety. Following the prison officials’ protests against her torture, she was able to file a complaint. It has now been revealed that she was severely tortured at least twice during this period. Her charge was “membership in the Committee to Help Create Labor Unions,” which security and intelligence forces have linked to Komala.
This case has drawn significant attention and criticism, with many demanding justice and the annulment of her death sentence.
