In a shocking and tragic incident, an Iranian refugee named Pouya Khavari lost his life after being severely beaten by Polish police forces at the shared border between the two countries. Two other refugees were also seriously injured in this incident.
According to Kolbarnews, these three refugees had been stranded for nearly twenty days in extremely harsh and exhausting conditions in the border region between Poland and Belarus. They were repeatedly deported by the security forces of both countries. A week ago, Polish police arrested them and attacked them using batons and firearms.
Pouya Khavari, born in 1990, died due to severe injuries and a fractured chest. His body was carried a long distance by two other refugees before being found by Belarusian police. The two other refugees were also seriously injured and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Pouya Khavari’s body is currently in Minsk, and his family has been asked to pay €5,000 to have his body returned to Iran. Houshang Moradi, born in 1994 and from Shahindezh, another injured refugee, is currently in Turkey. Mohammad, a 22-year-old refugee who was present during the incident, has since returned to Iran.
This tragic incident once again highlights the humanitarian dimensions of the refugee crisis at Europe’s borders and demonstrates the irreversible consequences of harsh policies and violent treatment of refugees.
