Balochistan: Death of a Sukhtbar After 240 Days in a Coma

A Baloch Sukhtbar who had been in a coma for 240 days following a vehicle rollover has passed away.

According to Kolbarnews, on Thursday, November 28, 2024, a Baloch Sukhtbar injured in a rollover accident on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, succumbed to his injuries after 7 months and 25 days (240 days) in a coma.

The individual was identified as Mohammad Ali Zarouzehi, son of Abdul Basir, a resident of Zahedan.

Local sources reported that on April 2, Mohammad Ali was returning from a fuel delivery when he fell asleep at the wheel near the city of Khash, 5 kilometers from town. His vehicle veered off the road and overturned, causing severe injuries and rendering him comatose.

They further stated that Mohammad Ali was initially transferred to Khash Hospital, then to Zahedan Hospital. After a few months, he was moved to a hospital in Yazd, but due to the high cost of treatment and the lack of progress, he was returned to Zahedan and placed under family care at home. He remained in a coma until his condition deteriorated, and he passed away yesterday at the Hospital in Zahedan.

Sukhtbari is considered an unconventional and hazardous job that many Baluch people in Baluchistan are forced into due to the lack of suitable and stable employment. Accidents, vehicle rollovers, and direct shootings by military and security forces are some of the dangers that Sukhtbars face. According to reports from Baluch activists, in the first six months of 2024, at least 133 Baluch Sukhtbars have died from shootings by military forces, traffic accidents, and vehicle fires, with another 80 injured in these incidents, including nine children
