Atefeh Rangriz Sentenced to Prison and Additional Penalties

Atefeh Rangriz, a writer, translator, and women’s rights activist, has been sentenced by the Damghan Revolutionary Court to 7 years and 7 months of imprisonment along with additional penalties.

According to Kolbarnews, Hossein Taj, Atefeh Rangriz’s lawyer, announced that a new verdict had been issued by the Dameghan Court while his client was on medical leave from Shahroud Prison for heart-related health issues. The court sentenced Rangriz to 7 years in prison for creating a Telegram group called “Gago Translation” and an additional 7 months for “propaganda against the regime.” She has also been banned from engaging in social media activities for 2 years. This comes amidst the rejection of her request to extend her medical leave, leaving her health at risk due to lack of access to necessary treatment.

Atefeh Rangriz was initially arrested on September 10, 2023, in Damghan by security forces and released on bail from Shahroud Prison on October 21, 2023.
In a previous trial at the Shahroud Revolutionary Court, she was sentenced to 2 years, 7 months, and 16 days for “collaboration with opposition groups” and an additional 7 months and 16 days for “propaganda against the regime.” On June 30, 2024, following another hearing on new charges at the Damghan Prosecutor’s Office, she was re-arrested and sent back to Shahroud Prison.

Rangriz has faced multiple arrests and convictions in the past due to her activism and advocacy for women’s rights. Her current health issues and lack of access to proper medical care have further intensified concerns about her well-being.
